The Material

The moment the material stops you

There is a moment in every well-designed room when the material stops you. With Handcraft Glazed Brick, that moment happens in the kitchen, the bathroom, the fireplace surround — anywhere a designer reaches for something that reads as both ancient and alive.

Each piece is formed from thin brick clay and individually glazed, so no two tiles are identical. The glaze pools and shifts across the surface, catching light differently at 8am than it does at dusk. Cocoa Bean reads like darkened chocolate in the morning and shifts toward espresso by evening; Ibiza Blue holds the depth of Mediterranean water; Rice Paper offers the warmth of aged linen — a neutral that earns its place rather than disappearing into it.

Formed & Fired By Hand

Every tile passes through a maker's hands

From the clay body to the final firing, each piece is built the slow way — thin brick clay formed by hand, individually glazed, and kiln-fired to set color and surface. The variation you see across a finished wall is not a flaw in the process. It is the process.

Format & Patterns

One tile, many layouts

The 2.5" x 8" format lends itself to running bond, stacked, herringbone, and basketweave — each transforming the same tile into a different statement. Running bond reads traditional, stacked vertical reads modern, herringbone adds movement.

Because every order is made to order, the collection adapts to your design. Custom sizes are available, and glazed edges can be specified for clean terminations at countertops, niches, and tile-to-surface transitions without exposing raw clay. Sixteen colorways are offered across gloss and matte finishes.

Applications

Where designers reach for it

Designers reach for this collection for feature walls, shower surrounds, kitchen backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, and accent moments in mudrooms and laundry rooms. Rated for wet areas and floor-rated for residential use, it holds up where it is asked to perform.

Designer Spotlight

A moody bathroom in Cocoa Bean

As seen in Ms. Vicious Design's Cocoa Bean Glazed Brick renovation — where a 50-year-old bathroom became an editorial space worth photographing. A standard running bond in a single bold colorway, proof that this tile rewards designers who commit to a point of view.

Common Questions

Glazed Brick, answered

What makes Handcraft Glazed Brick different from standard brick tile?

Each piece is formed and individually glazed, producing natural tonal variation and surface movement that machine-made tile cannot replicate. The glaze shifts in different lighting conditions, giving walls a depth that reads differently throughout the day.

Is Handcraft Glazed Brick suitable for shower walls and wet areas?

Yes — it is rated for wet areas and suitable for shower surrounds, bathroom walls, and kitchen backsplashes. It is floor-rated for residential use and commercially rated for wall applications. Proper waterproofing and grout joint sealing is recommended in all wet installations.

Can I get custom sizes or glazed edges?

Yes. Custom sizes and glazed edges are both available — email sales@alexanderjames.shop with your project specifications. Glazed edges allow for clean terminations at countertops, niches, and tile-to-surface transitions without exposing raw clay.

How long does production take and how do samples work?

Handcraft Glazed Brick is made to order — allow 4 to 6 weeks for production. Samples ship within 3 to 5 business days so you can evaluate the glaze in your project's actual lighting before placing a full order. We strongly recommend sampling before specifying.

What patterns work best with the 2.5" x 8" brick format?

The format works beautifully in running bond, stacked vertical, herringbone, and basketweave. Running bond reads traditional, stacked vertical reads modern, herringbone adds movement. As seen in the Ms. Vicious Design project, a standard running bond in a single bold colorway can deliver a dramatic, editorial result.
