Quick ViewHoned limestone is limestone at its most precise. The surface has been ground flat and finished to a smooth, low-sheen matte — no reflection, no polish, just the pure material reading clearly in any light. It is the finish designers specify when they want the stone to be present but not performative.
Clean lines, controlled tonal variation, and a surface that accepts both modern and traditional contexts without resistance. Honed limestone works on bathroom floors and walls, kitchen surfaces, entry halls, and large-format interior applications where the brief is refinement rather than texture. It pairs particularly well with polished plaster, unlacquered brass, and white oak.
Available across multiple color families and formats. Order samples to assess the surface and tonal variation in your project's actual conditions before specifying.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a honed finish mean on limestone? +
Honed means the stone has been ground to a smooth, flat, matte surface with no polish or sheen. Unlike polished limestone which reflects light, honed limestone absorbs it — producing a quieter, more refined appearance that shows the stone's natural color and veining without distraction.
Is honed limestone suitable for floors? +
Yes — honed limestone is one of the most widely specified finishes for interior floors. It provides better slip resistance than polished stone and ages gracefully with use, developing a subtle patina over time. It is particularly well suited to high-traffic entry halls, kitchen floors, and bathroom floors where both durability and refinement are required.
Does honed limestone need to be sealed? +
Yes. Limestone is a porous natural stone and sealing is strongly recommended, particularly on floors and in wet areas. A penetrating impregnating sealer should be applied before grouting and again after installation is complete. Proper sealing protects against staining and moisture penetration while preserving the natural matte appearance of the honed surface. Can honed limestone be used in wet areas and showers? +
Yes, with proper installation and sealing. Honed limestone is commonly specified for shower walls and bathroom floors in high-end residential projects. Because limestone is sensitive to acidic products, avoid using harsh chemical cleaners in wet installations. A pH-neutral stone cleaner is recommended for ongoing maintenance. Contact us to confirm wet area suitability for specific products before specifying.
How do I order samples? +
Samples can be ordered directly from any product page. We strongly recommend sampling before specifying — honed limestone reads differently across warm and cool lighting conditions, and seeing the actual surface in your project's light is the only reliable way to confirm the selection for your client.
